From Darlene in San Diego - Cubicles and Daily Survival

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

47 HelpDo you have to cope with spending 40+ hours a week in cube farm? You’ll enjoy these helpful “survival” tips compiled by Darlene - a blogger from San Diego. Cubicles don’t have to create the cramped, uncomfortable work environment depicted in Dilbert cartoons if you and your coworkers make an effort to get along. A lot of it just boils down to being polite.

Darlene reminds readers that no one wants to hear every detail of your home life. Keep private conversations private by restricting them to break time when you can pop outside and use your cell phone. Besides noise, she also recommends being careful what your coworkers see (risqué artwork is a no-no) and what they smell (keep your lunch choices bland). Leasing Space and Office Furniture - Del Mar, CA

Monday, March 29th, 2010

46 Conference RoomFor small business owners, setting up an office can be a time consuming chore. Some enterprising real estate providers are addressing this with one-stop shopping to lease both space and office furniture. Del Mar, CA is one place where entrepreneurs can move into a fully furnished executive suite at a moment’s notice.

Besides furniture, the office space comes with T1 internet access. You can pay as you go for a photocopier and fax machine. Meeting and conference rooms are available for an additional fee - you can even get an administrative assistant as part of the deal if you don’t feel like hiring your own. There is also a kitchen, gym, lounge, and shower room.

Since this type of facility has 24 hour access, that opens up an interesting possibility. The time required to start a successful business will make it seem like you are living at the office anyway. Why not ditch your apartment and just move into your executive suite? Of course, you’d have to make sure your office furniture included a comfy sofa for you to crash on. And don’t get caught - that’s probably a lease violation!

Haworth Cubicles Produced Without Creating Landfill Waste

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

45 landfill signChristmas came early for Planet Earth last year when one office furniture corporation made its most recent waste-to-landfill announcement on December 18th. Haworth cubicles are now “greener” than ever. The company’s U.S. locations went from producing 4.6 million pounds of landfill-bound waste to zero pounds in 2009. Global facilities in Shanghai, China and Pune, India have also achieved this goal. Haworth’s remaining production plants are slated to complete their transition away from relying on landfills by 2011.

How Do They Do It?

Accomplishing the elimination of landfill waste generally requires a three pronged approach. Using lean manufacturing principles during production is one element of this strategy. It addresses ways to avoid wasting resources in the first place.

Reclaiming and recycling pre-consumer content that would normally be dumped is a closely related process. From 1993-2009, Haworth’s cubicle and office furniture plants recycled 206,000 tons of waste globally.

Haworth is also using waste-to-energy technology to recapture value from what might once have been considered trash. That’s how the company is currently handling the approximately 1 million pounds of waste they still produce in the U.S.

Other Haworth Sustainability Objectives

45 Recycle signDuring a recent renovation of the corporate headquarters for Haworth, cubicles weren’t outfitted with typical dedicated phone lines. Instead, the company opted for wireless, internet based technology that lets employees move phones wherever they are needed. This eliminated the need to purchase 407,000 feet of copper cabling.

The building also boasts one of the largest living roofs in the U.S. Over 45,000 square feet of pre-planted modular green roofing units grace the top of One Haworth Center. Here, 11 species of succulent sedum thrive year round and absorb rainfall that would otherwise contribute to storm water runoff. The building is well insulated by this natural rooftop habitat, reducing energy costs to keep the interior environment at a comfortable temperature.

The company is also continuing to address emissions production. In the last 10 years, a move toward water based glues and finishes has dropped related air emissions by 70%. This makes Haworth cubicles not only more environmentally friendly to build but safer for use in the workplace. Check out the corporation’s full sustainability report here.

Brighten Up Your Cubicle’s Vista With Original Artwork

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

44 PaintbrushesModern cubicle manufacturers offer a lot of visual interest in their product designs. They incorporate colorful fabrics, glass panels, lovely wood veneers, and more. However, if your company has old fashion grey fabric panels, the view from inside your workstation may be pretty dreary. Changing your cubicle’s vista from dull to interesting may be up to you.

The good news is that you are not entirely alone. Artist David Wenell has made it his mission in life to beautify cubicles with original art pieces. This lucky devil is a stay at home dad, but there’s a good chance that he was subjected to a boring cubicle at one time. His oil and watercolor paintings often focus on otherworldly landscapes bursting with color. At less than $25 per painting, this guy isn’t looking to strike it rich. He’s just doing his own small part to brighten up your workday.

Check out his collection to see if something strikes your fancy. Think you can do better? Pick up some paints at the craft store and make your own cubicle art!

Equality in Office Furniture: Del Mar Executive and Guest Chairs

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

43 Del Mar chairHave you ever noticed that some people only feel important if they have the nicest chair in the room? An oversized executive desk chair upholstered in rich leather says “I’m the only person here who deserves luxurious office furniture.” Del Mar chairs from DMI don’t encourage this kind of mind game.

Instead, the 7302 collection offers identical designs for executive and guest chairs. Both are constructed with a Sedona Cherry finished frame and genuine leather (in black or brown) for the upholstery. The desk chair has casters to make it mobile; but otherwise both types of high backed seating are the same size, shape, and quality. Are you an executive who likes to start meetings off on an equal footing with your guests and make sure everyone is comfortable? Del Mar chairs may be just what you’ve been looking for.

Office Furniture In San Diego Art Exhibition

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

41 Small World DioramaDo you remember making a diorama as a child for a school project? This educational art form is still popular among modern artists. Since the workplace is a central part of today’s lifestyle, it isn’t surprising that art sometimes incorporates office furniture. In San Diego, the Museum of Contemporary Art hosted a fascinating collection a few years back. One of the exhibits was a full sized cubicle workstation complete with tackable fabric panels, a desk and chair.

In lieu of the typical desk paraphernalia, the worksurface hosts a miniature landscape in 3-D. Tiny trees dot the rolling hills and a petite waterfall graces the desktop where a flat screen monitor would normally be. Artist Clara Williams highlights the clash of the natural and artificial in a way that is both beautiful and compelling. This contrast reminds us of how disconnected we are from the environment when we spend all day under fluorescent lights and surrounded by manmade objects.

The full diorama exhibit collection is featured in the book Small World. Right now, a single copy of this paperback (used) is available on Amazon for the low price of…$923.53. Now, there’s a seller who is divorced from reality!

Fun Facts: Your New Cubicles Never Looked This Good

Monday, March 15th, 2010

40 Cubicle houseBuying all new cubicles isn’t the only improvement you can make to your office environment. This cunning group of coworkers has figured out how to upgrade an existing workspace to make it feel much cozier. Employee Stewart Douglas didn’t expect to come back from vacation and find himself the recipient of a “Total Cubicle Makeover”.

Watch the video to see what happens when office workers have extra time (and cash) at their disposal. Hopefully, since these guys were engineers they knew what they were doing with the electrical wiring. Most employers would consider this type of prank a serious fire hazard!

Sierra Vista Office Furniture Company Offers Advice

Friday, March 12th, 2010

39 Filing CabinetsPro Office Solutions in Arizona is the featured sponsor of a series of articles about Sierra Vista office furniture. Much of the content is directed at entrepreneurs who work from home. However, some of the advice for maximizing use of space can also be applied to corporate environments. Here are a couple of helpful tips for selecting filing cabinets.

Lateral files double as work surfaces. For a U shaped workstation, a lateral filing credenza can serve as a multi-purpose return. Just make sure there is sufficient room for the employee to open the drawers while seated in his/her office chair.

Vertical filing towers are the ultimate option for using space that would otherwise go to waste. Choose models that have locking devices that prevent more than one drawer from being opened at a time. Secure the filing cabinet to prevent tipping and reduce the risk of workplace injury.

Cubicle Fun Facts - Have You Ever Used Cubicles For A Social Experiment?

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

38 Outdoor cubicleTake a look at this cool video and see passersby having the time of their lives in a faux office workstation in a very unusual setting. This is probably the first time anyone has used cubicles to create a psychological experiment that doubles as street theater. YouTube user JPAndreoni set up a cubicle complete with a fake phone and computer on the sidewalk of a busy city street. His team even added a water cooler to solidify the impression of being in a typical office environment.

He developed this concept to explore the idea that folks in Western societies feel most comfortable interacting with each other in a work setting. To quote JP, “By placing a work related object in the public space I created a “safe zone” for people to socialize and/or network without feeling awkward.” It certainly had the desired effect!
