San Diego Office Desks Can Go To A Good Cause

Friday, December 25th, 2009

9 Teachers deskIt’s nice to know that people care about paying it forward here in San Diego - especially during the holidays. Office desks may seem like an unusual gift, but they can make a big difference to cash strapped organizations. Over on Yelp.com, poster Heather B. asks how she can donate her used office furniture to a non-profit or a school. Respondent dan “sophomoric” q. has a great recommendation - visit the ILoveSchools website to find teachers in need.

This site has a section specifically for individuals or businesses who want to donate used or new equipment or supplies. You can use the search function to help match your donation with schools in San Diego. Office desks can be used in administrative centers, as teacher’s desks in classrooms, for work stations in computer labs, and much more. The holiday season is the perfect time to renovate your offices and ensure that your old furniture goes to a worthy cause.

Knoll Systems Furniture - Equity Call Center Workstations

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

8 515_nativeKnoll currently has an interesting white paper on call centers available in its “sector focus” library. According to the data in this paper, there are approximately 78,000 call centers in the U.S. Some 2 million employees work in these environments. The nature of the work (which could reasonably be described as uninspiring and stressful) often leads to high turnover. Knoll systems furniture is designed to take just a little of the dreariness and discomfort out of this work atmosphere.

The Equity Collection

Cubicles featuring Equity design panels offer two basic configuration options (and lots of variations). They can be connected at the standard 90 degrees or at 120 degrees. Most components can be used with either angle. You can set up multiple workstations on a single spine to make delivery of data and power to all your cubicles less complex. This can be accomplished in stair step configurations or rectangular workspaces.8 561_native

The 120 degree connections also give you the option of creating cubicles in organic honeycomb or radial shapes if this better suits your workflow. One nice touch offered by Knoll systems furniture is their patented centerline modularity measurement method. Panel dimensions are calculated with the width of the posts already included - simplifying space planning.

Building Equity

Designing and installing an Equity cubicle system doesn’t have to be a one-time event. Stackable tile panels and integrated brackets allow you to add height to your workstation dividers at any time. This can turn a low walled desk into a personal office in just minutes with the addition of frosted glass privacy panels. Stack tiles as high as 120” for maximum privacy.

8 2408_nativeAdding workstations or restructuring your existing furnishings is made as pain-free as possible with standardized parts. Knoll boasts that its newest additions are still designed to connect with virtually all the components the company has manufactured over the last 3 decades.

Compact storage options are available to make the most of each station. Curves add visual interest and soften the edges of these Knoll systems furniture workspaces. Details include metal banded desk edges - a nice alternative to traditional laminates. Every ergonomic and aesthetic touch is designed to make your call center a more pleasant place to work.

Modular Office Furniture: San Diego Sectional Seating

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

7 Modular FurnitureNothing makes a reception or waiting area feel more comfortable than the right piece of modular office furniture. San Diego businesses that might choose this option include dental offices, medical clinics, and restaurants. Basically, anywhere family members might spend time waiting together.

This is also a nice option for large reception areas in any industry where you have room for several seating configurations. For example, you could place a sectional sofa along the L of one wall and group separate chairs around small tables. That way, people can choose the option they find most comfortable. This approach also allows you to match the size of your furnishings to the space available.

Don’t forget that you don’t have to stick with traditional office equipment when it comes to furnishing your reception area. Here’s a cozy piece that can double as modular office furniture: San Diego Hazelnut Sectional Sofa. This offering from True Contemporary is available with an accompanying coffee table that is perfect for displaying magazines in a waiting room.

Allsteel Cubicles: Align Yourself Now

Monday, December 21st, 2009

6 K_align_material3_heroThe Align series of Allsteel cubicles offer you the opportunity to “align” the look of your workspaces with the rest of your office environment. That’s because this collection has the kind of aesthetic appeal you would be happy to display everywhere from your reception area to your executive offices. Align furnishings are available for each of these areas so you can achieve a seamless look.

That’s an important step in your internal branding process. Treating your employees to the same quality of interior design as you afford your clients and top management sends a message that you value your human resources. Having the opportunity to enjoy the “finer things” of office life can make a big difference in employee attitudes.

Fine Detailing

There’s just something about the warm earth tones, natural wood grains, and finely crafted details of this line that make it soothing and appealing. Veneer tiles are trimmed and bonded carefully so that no additional bottom edging is required. These Allsteel cubicles can also be finished in a custom 1/8” laminate of your choice. This means you have the option of integrating them into an existing color scheme.

Lots of Panel Tile Choices

Breaking up the workspace with different panel heights is simple with the award winning Align design. It offers tiles in 8” increments. This allows you to create a “landscape” of varying cube structures that meet work assignment requirements and worker preferences. Power/data portals are accessible along the bottom of each tile or at desk level. They can also be inserted higher on the panel at any of the 8” marks.

Another nice aspect of the panels is the utility of their features. You can mix and match decorative tiles with tool pieces. Outfit the interior of your Allsteel cubicles with dry erase tiles, tackable surfaces, or panes of glass. There is even a pass-through tile that allows employees to transfer physical documents and files between cubes.

See San Diego Cubicles Installed

5 Cubicle InstallationHave you ever seen how we get things done here in San Diego? Cubicles may take hours to install for other people, but the guys in this video handle the entire job in just over 1 minute. OK - that’s using time lapse film techniques! Still, it’s pretty cool to see a whole office environment take shape before your eyes.

What ends up being really impressive is that these guys pick up after themselves as they go. This leaves the office space spotless and ready for habitation by busy employees. That’s one of the definite advantages of having a professional crew on the job in San Diego. Cubicles from many of the leading manufacturers are so well designed that you can install them yourself. However, it helps to have a team working together to get it done in record time.

Of course, the question remains… who exactly are those guys from the video?

Can Refurbished Office Cubicles Delay ‘Peak Oil’?

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

4 Barrel of OilCould buying refurbished office cubicles in lieu of new ones delay the day when we run out of fossil fuels? That’s one conclusion you might reach after reading this news article on oil shortages caused by new cubicle manufacturing. The link between the ubiquity of cubicles in the work place and the dwindling global oil supply is disturbing.

In fact, it’s being reported on CNN. No, not the well known TV network - I’m talking about the Cubicle News Network. This spoof news website authored by William R. Vitanyi, Jr. is a truly fun time waster. Of course, since ‘Workplace Internet Leisure Browsing’ (WILB) has now been scientifically proven to increase productivity you might not get in trouble for surfing over there to take a peek.

On a serious note, refurbished office cubicles do save on energy use and raw materials. That’s one reason they are less expensive than brand new panel systems.

Massage Office Chairs: San Diego Employees Need to Relax

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

3 Massage Office ChairAccording to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), workplace stress is a leading factor in poor worker health and loss of productivity. Maintaining a good work/life balance is one way to combat stress. Making the workplace more pleasant is another. What group of employees would say “no” to being supplied with 4 motor massage office chairs? San Diego masseuses can be hired to give employees workplace chair massages, but that’s a one-time event (and the costs can add up quickly).

When you purchase office chairs with vibrating massage features included, workers can enjoy this equipment every day. Worried that your employees might get too relaxed if they have one of these machines at their workstation? Consider putting a couple in the employee lounge for use during breaks. A 10-15 minute session in the lap of luxury is sure to put a worker in a good mood for the rest of the day.

Telemarketing Cubicles: Understanding Acoustics

Monday, December 14th, 2009

2 telemarket cubesControlling noise levels in your telemarketing cubicles presents significant challenges. When employees are exposed to excessive noise, they can’t concentrate. If they are on the phone, they may have to struggle to hear the person on the other end of the line. Even worse, the customer may hear the buzz of multiple conversations in the background. This gives a poor impression of the professional atmosphere of your company.

How do you control the sound in your office space? This is actually a complex processes that involves the acoustical performance of every surface including walls, flooring, ceiling, and furnishings. The way your telemarketing cubicles are arranged also impacts overall noise levels. An acoustical designer can help you determine the best materials and layout for maximum noise reduction.

NRC Rating

There are two types of noise control ratings commonly used in the office furnishing industry. The Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) measures how much sound a particular material can absorb in mid-range frequencies. This is measured from least effective (0) to most effective (1). A panel with an NRC rating of .2 would be slightly sound reducing. One with an NRC rating of .7 would be fairly efficient.2 DEL-MAR-VENEER-Desk

One common complaint about advertised rating specs is that they are based on lab results. The actual effectiveness of a panel in real life conditions may be much lower. It’s a good idea to contact the cubicle manufacturer if you have questions about how they calculated their NRC rating.

STC Rating

The Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating of a product reveals its ability to block sound transmission. It is measured in increments from 35-60. The higher the number, the more sound a panel can block. In practice, structure has a lot to do with STC. For example, taller telemarketing cubicles can block more sound than ones with low dividing walls. Cubes that don’t have gaps where the panels connect will also transmit less sound.

How These Ratings Interact

2 telemarketing cubicleA high NRC works by reducing noise within a space. In other words, a person would experience less sound reverberating off the walls of his/her own cube because the panels absorb it. A high STC works by reducing the transfer of noise into an adjoining space. In other words, the person in the next cube would experience less sound leaking through from “next door” because it is blocked.

Unfortunately, these two ratings are mutually exclusive. Either you can have acoustic panels that absorb sound, or wall systems that block it. Deciding which option is best for your space is, again, best achieved with the help of a professional acoustics consultant. Otherwise, you may end up paying top dollar for telemarketing cubicles that do exactly the opposite of what you intended.

Office Furniture - San Diego Area Refinishing

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

1 Painted File CabinetYou have several options when it comes to buying used office furniture. San Diego area vendors often sell these items refurbished in like-new condition. Each piece is stripped and professionally refinished. You can also buy furnishings that are used and not restored (although they may be lightly retouched). If you buy from a reputable vendor, these are usually only gently worn and still in decent condition.

In contrast, when you purchase office furniture at an auction or liquidation sale, it may have an unacceptable degree of visible wear and damage. In addition, if you are buying one or two pieces at a time due to budget restraints, they may not all match.

Paint that is chipped is another common problem with this type of office furniture. San Diego retouching companies like Linden Painting offer a unique service that can address these problems to some extent. They perform onsite electrostatic painting on solid metal items such as file cabinets. Static electricity is generated to attract the paint to the surface being finished. Reduced overspray makes this process quick and clean compared to traditional spray painting.

San Diego: Office Furniture Highlighted at Interior Design Expo

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Fit ChairIn August, the SoCal chapter of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) hosted an exciting mini-trade show in San Diego. Office furniture manufacturers including Herman Miller, Knoll, and Steelcase supported the IIDA in showcasing the newest and brightest ideas in commercial interior design.

The event was called NeoCan’t - a play on the name of the famous NeoCon expo in Chicago. The IIDA created this event for those who couldn’t make the trek to Illinois. They selected the San Diego Wine & Culinary Center as the venue. No doubt good food and fine wine helped make this “consolation” trade show a success!

Over 200 attendees were present including designers, educators, and those just learning the art of interior design. Kimball Office was one of the manufacturers presenting new products at the expo. Their innovative Fit chair certainly gives off a laid back San Diego office furniture vibe. A reception area furnished with this vibrant, fashion forward seating would certainly make a lasting first impression.
